Quality taxidermy work begins with the best possible specimen. You are spending your hard earned money to preserve a memorable hunt so you should want the very best in return. That said it all starts with proper care of your trophy from the moment it is harvested. This is done by limiting exposure to the sun and getting the bird cool as fast as possible. In addition, handling the bird ONLY by the bill or feet are safe ways to preserve the quality of its feathers. If the bird is placed on a lanyard it is best to do it by its feet in order to not damage the delicate neck feathers.
Wrap the feet in soaking wet paper towels.
Wrap the head in soaking wet paper towels, lay the birds head over its back to provide the best support for the birds neck.
Finally place the bird in a one or two gallon zip lock freezer bag gently squeezing out any air prior to closing it. Position your trophy in your freezer where it will not be disturbed by other things in your freezer.
When shipping birds please fill out a migratory bird tag for each bird being shipped found at the link above. Also to insure the bird makes it in good shape; ship the bird on a Monday with two day shipping. Avoid shipping near major holidays as this will delay the birds arrival and compromise your trophy. When packing the bird use a small box and stuff empty space with newspaper. This will help insulate the bird and prevent it from moving about the box while in transit
